In a statement issued to DRUM on behalf of Andile’s family, Michelle Harding, of the production, said Andile had died Friday morning after receiving the best medical care.
“On behalf of Mrs. Gumbi and family, it is with profound sadness we share the news that our beloved Andile passed away this morning. Andile received the best medical care possible. We request that the family be given space to grieve and that their privacy be respected in this very difficult time,” she said.
According to a statement posted by the production on their Facebook page, last week on Friday, Andile suffered a heart attack. “In the morning it deteriorated and suffered a cardiac arrest, but the medical staff of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center managed to resuscitate it successfully,” they wrote. The program was suspended last week so they could focus on Andile’s medical care while his wife Hlengiwe was making arrangements to reach her husband.

“In the early morning he deteriorated and suffered a cardiac arrest, but the medical personnel at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre managed to successfully resuscitate him. It is comforting to know that Andile Gumbi is receiving the best medical care in the world as he is fighting for his life and the medical professionals are trying to determine the cause of his condition. We further ask that people pray for his speedy and full recovery.”
Later, the production released another statement that read:
“We thank everyone for your support and for all the prayers for Andile. Andile’s wife will be with him later today and we hope that her presence will help him in his recovery.”
In their last statement on behalf of the Gumbi family, he passed away in the early hours of Friday morning.
