Alexi Laiho Career

Laiho, celebrated across the metal scene for his virtuosic skill on guitar, was born in Espoo in 1979, and began learning the instrument as a teenager. He formed the group Inearthed in his mid-teens inspired by the bleak, burgeoning metal scene across Scandinavia in the early 1990s as well as classic heavy metal. In 1997 the band changed their name to Children of Bodom, a reference to the murder of three teenagers at Espoo’s Lake Bodom in 1960.

Launched in the metal scene for his virtuoso skill in guitar, Laiho was born in Espoo in 1979 and started learning the instrument when he was young. He formed the band Inearthed in his mid-teens, inspired by classic heavy metal as well as the bleak, thriving metal scene in Scandinavia in the early 1990s. In 1997, the group changed its name to Children of Bodom, referring to the murder of three teenagers in Espoo’s Lake Bodom in 1960.

They released their first album Something Wild later in 1997, and their reputation grew between consecutive records, and the fourth album, Hate Crew Deathroll (2003), became the first among six Finnish charts. Their success went global when Blooddrunk reached number 22 in the US and UK in 2008, a rare success for a death metal album. They released 10 studio albums and two live LPs.

The band disbanded in 2019 and gave a final concert in Helsinki in December that year, and Bodom After Midnight was formed later. Laiho was also a member of the Sinergy and Kylähullut groups (for Finnish “village idiots”) and founded the Local Group in 2013. Early in his career, Laiho was guest with Impaled Nazarene and Thy Serpent.

The band sold more than 250,000 records in Finland in their home country, and, according to their website, Laiho was named “Best Metal Guitarist” by readers of Guitar World magazine.
Under the direction of Bodom After Midnight, the guitarist has received many international awards for his music and the Metal Hammer has been awarded the Golden Gods award.

In 2015, he played his own composition “Helden 100 Guitar” and led a group of 100 guitarists at the Helsinki Festival in 2015.
Laiho later formed the Bodom After Midnight supergroup. According to the official Facebook page, the group recorded three songs and produced a music video that will be released posthumously.
In the statement signed by Bodom After Midnight management, it was stated that in addition to Children of Bodom, the guitarist was also associated with the actions of Warmen, Sinergy, Kylähullut and The Local Band.
“Alexi was the most loving and glorious husband and father,” said his wife Kelli Wright-Laiho in a statement. “Our hearts are broken forever.”

Alexi Laiho Death & Cause

“We have hearts and great sadness to announce the death of Alexi Laiho,” Napalm Records said in a statement on behalf of Bodom After Midnight.
“It is absolutely devastated and our hearts are broken by the sudden loss of our dear friend and band member,” said a statement signed by bandmates Daniel, Mitja and Waltteri.

In a statement on Laiho’s official Facebook page, it was stated that the musician died at his home in Helsinki last week and suffered from long-term health problems in his last years.

Among those paying tribute was Alex Skolnick of Testament, who said that Laiho “created new possibilities in extreme metal with technically sophisticated solos that are their own as well as the best in more popular metal genres”.
