Alonzo Brooks Death Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Monday that Alonzo’s body was exhumed and taken to Dover Air Force Base for investigation as part of the ongoing federal investigation into his death. The auditor’s report concludes that his death was a murder.
“We knew that Alonzo Brooks died under very suspicious circumstances,” said Duston Slinkard, acting US Attorney General. “This new review, by a team of the world’s best forensic pathologists and experts, reveals that it was not an accident. Alonzo Brooks was killed. We are doing everything we can to bring those responsible to justice and we will allocate no resources.
According to the statement, the new autopsy focuses on the body parts of Alonzo’s body concluding that they are inconsistent with their normal disintegration patterns. Details of the investigation are kept confidential for investigative purposes.
In 2019, the US Kansas State Attorney General and the FBI reopened the investigation into Brooks’ death, which had been dormant for years. His case was featured in Dateline’s online series “Cold Case Spotlight” last year.
As part of the new investigation, the FBI also announced a $ 100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for Alonzo’s death.
In the initial investigation, a forensic officer in Linn County said he was unable to determine the cause of death and that no arrests were revealed in the witnesses’ interviews.
According to officials, the new investigation focuses on determining whether Alonzo, an African-American man, was the victim of a racial murder.
The 23-year-old was last seen live during a party at a farmhouse on the outskirts of La Cygne in April 2004. He was one of three African-American men at the party attended by 100 or more people.
Alonzo’s family told Dateline that he went to the party with his friends, but they left before that and left him without leaving him home. When Alonzo didn’t come home the next day, his family and friends contacted the Linn County Sheriff’s Department.
According to reports at the time, the Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement investigated the areas around the farmhouse, including parts of the nearby Middle Creek, but could not find Alonzo.
After Alonzo was missing for almost a month, a group of family and friend held a search. They started the road next to the farmhouse and walked the two strands of Middle Creek. In less than an hour, they found Alonzo’s body partly on a pile of bushes and branches in the stream.
Alonzo’s father said it was he and a family friend who noticed him.
Billy Brooks Sr. told Dateline, “God, it was awful.” To find my son like that. Nothing can describe this pain. ”
During their search, Billy said that the sky was covered that day and the rain was threatened. But when they found Alonzo’s body, the sky cleared and the sun came out.
“It was as if my son was telling me everything was fine,” Billy said. At least we found him. We didn’t want to find it that way, but at least we did. ”
Alonzo’s family continues to seek answers in their case. A Facebook page “Justice for Alonzo Brooks” was created to discuss the case and help share awareness.
