Hornung was born from humble beginnings in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville, where he was three sports stars at Flaget High. He later joined Notre Dame at the suggestion of his mother and his high school best friend Sherrill Sipes, who was teammates with the Irish. To date, Hornung and Sipes are the only two players from the same high school to start the Notre Dame backcourt at the same time.

Hornung, then quarterback, won the Heisman Trophy in 1956, graduating from Notre Dame with a business degree that same year. He continues to be recognized as one of the best players in the school’s rich football history.
