At one point during the stop, Dolce dragged 25-year-old officer Joe Burson down the road. Burson fired during the incident, but it’s unclear what prompted the suspect’s escape or how Dolce was able to drag Burson away.

Holly Springs Chief Tom Keheley described Burson as a “really nice” person who will be missed across the department. Burson’s cause of death is currently unknown.

“He was an exemplary officer,” Keheley said. “If you had the ability to clone police officers, you would want your officer to be Joe Burson.”

According to the department’s Facebook page, Burson was sworn in as an officer after graduating from the academy in March last year. Keheley said he was able to speak to Burson’s widow before speaking to reporters on Thursday.

A shift supervisor was with Burson during the traffic stop, and other officers close to the scene were able to respond quickly. Investigators will review video of the stop, including Burson’s body camera.

“There were several police officers at the scene,” Keheley said. “Most, if not all, of them had body cameras. How valuable the footage was depended on when they arrived. And yes, there were car camera footage as well.”

Authorities did not provide additional information about the investigation that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be involved in, at the request of the Holly Springs department.

Drivers are urged to avoid part of Hickory Road as authorities continue the investigation. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said the area from New Light to Little Roads is expected to be closed.
