Randi Chavarria was arrested at his home in Round Rock, Texas, Tuesday morning and charged with the second-degree crime.

Today, the Round Rock Police Department arrested Randi Chaverria, a Round Rock High School teacher, following an investigation of an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student. School administrators were first notified of the allegations on Monday, November 18.

According to the district’s website, Chaverria was very involved in the school.

“During her time at Round Rock, she has applied that mindset to making a positive impact on her campus by leading the Adopt-A-Child a community service project,” the district said online.

According to online jail records, Chaverria is still in custody at the Williamson County Jail as of Tuesday morning.

She faces up to 20 years behind bars if she is convicted of the charge. Additional details of the accusations against Chavarria, which he taught at Round Rock High School, have not yet been released, but he was fired from his job. Her alleged crimes arose only a year and a half after her school district named her High School Teacher of the Year.

Groff said Chaverria had passed a Texas Department of Public Safety background check before being hired, as well as employment reference checks. Back in May, she won “Secondary Teacher of the Year” from the district. At that point, she had been a teacher for five years working as a Family and Consumer Science teacher for the last two years.
