Brittan Higgins is a  former Australian Liberal Officer who claimed to have been raped in the House of Parliament in 2009. – In March 2019, after a Friday night drinking session, a former female media worker entered the Parliament Building and allegedly raped it in the defense industry minister’s office

Brittany Higgin, then a junior staffer, was only four weeks away from her post at the time. Her story follows the story of other women who talk about their inappropriate treatment while working in the Houses of Parliament.

She said she felt asked to choose between making a formal complaint or continuing her job, stating her reason for continuing to work as a staff member. After a term working for Employment Minister Michaelia Cash, Ms. Higgins has now resigned from working for the Government.

Prime Minister’s Office Statement

In a statement made by a Prime Ministry official, it was stated that the reports were “very sad”.

“Throughout the whole process, the Government’s primary concern was to support Ms. Higgins’ well-being in every possible way. Ms. Higgins was asked for guidance on how she always wanted to move forward and support and respect her decisions. ”

Days after the alleged incident, a meeting was held between Senator Reynolds, Ms. Higgins, and a senior officer at the minister’s office – the alleged crime scene. The Prime Ministry acknowledged that holding the meeting in this place was an “oversight”.

“Given the seriousness of the incident, the location of the meeting with Miss Higgins should have been considered, and in retrospect, this oversight was regretful.”

Senator Reynolds, now Secretary of Defense, told the Senate that she was “extremely worried” for Ms. Higgins’ sake. “Women should be safe and always feel safe in the workplace,” he said.

“My only priority in this regard was to ensure that my staff at the time received the well-being and support they needed. This included ensuring that he was clear about the support offered to him and the right to file a formal complaint with the Australian Federal Police if he chose it. ”

He added that “he suffered and remained in that position to make sure that my staff member was empowered to determine how he wanted to address the issue.”

Senator Reynolds said that while setting up the meeting, he did not know that the alleged incident was happening in the office and if he had known he would have the meeting elsewhere.

Brittany Higgins No Official Complaint

ACT Police confirmed that they were speaking to a complainant in April 2019, but the complainant chose not to file a formal complaint. “Victims always have a say in how far a police investigation will go, can determine that an issue will not go to prosecution, and can withdraw from the process at any time,” the police said.

“It is not uncommon for an investigation to be stopped, discontinued or resumed at a later time at the request of a victim.”

Higgins said at the time that he chose not to file a formal complaint because of the Liberal Party’s desire to protect its reputation and continue its “dream job”. She said she was given the option to work in Western Australia – Senator Reynolds’ hometown – or go home on the Gold Coast for the May 2019 election campaign.

She said she was told she wouldn’t have a job after the election if she went to the Gold Coast.
