West Point officials still believe that the 20-year-old cadet, missing since Friday, is somewhere in the extensive military camps and training camps.

“There has been no cell phone or financial activity in more than 72 hours,” Colonel Cecil Marson, commander of the garrison, said in a recent press release. “This leads us to believe that it is still near West Point.”

Kurita was about to go to the training area to compete in military skills events in an attempt to be selected for the Sandhurst Military Skills Competition next spring, said Lt. Col. Christopher Ophardt, a spokesman for West Point.

The search effort, which consists of approximately 400 people, including 130 soldiers from the military police in Fort Drum, New York, has covered more than 6,000 acres in West Point, he adds.

The diving teams of the New York State Police have been using sonar to help search the Hudson River, as well as lakes and ponds in West Point.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Kurita’s location to contact the West Point Military Police at 845-938-2208.

 

Investigation Reports

The Army Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the missing cadet and weapon, according to the statement.

West Point officials stressed that they do not believe that the missing cadet is a threat to others, but it can be a danger to himself.

“He left his backpack, Kevlar’s helmet, and all his magazines,” said Ophardt, who did not give details on why school officials believe the cadet may want to hurt himself.

The West Point press release says that Kurita should attend a military skills competition scheduled at 5:30 p.m. on October 18 but never appeared. The disappearance of the cadet is being investigated by the Army Criminal Investigation Division. While the search efforts are being led by the 23rd Military Police Company and the New York State Police. There are 130 soldiers involved in the search for Fort Drum in New York. The search has covered more than 6,000 acres. The October 22 search has been hampered by adverse weather conditions in the area.
