A third person was charged with murder in connection with a failed car kidnapping on 3 December that resulted in the death of a retired Chicago firefighter.

Devin Barron Arrest

Barron of Lynwood faces first-degree murder and gun charges related to Dwain Williams’ death.

Judge David R. Navarro denied bail and at the same time upheld a non-bail petition for violating the evacuation terms for an ongoing stolen motor vehicle case against him.

The other two, one of a 15-year-old boy, were accused of the shooting and murder of Williams, a retired Chicago fire brigade lieutenant, who fired guns while approaching during an apparent ambush. The escape driver is free.

The Tribune previously reported that police believed car thieves were members of a “crew” who stole cars in the southern suburbs.

Police said Barron was one of two gunmen who walked into a popcorn shop on the 2400 block of West 118th Street in Beverly Woods neighborhood after a stolen black Ford Fusion that followed Williams’ burgundy Jeep Grand Cherokee.

They waited for him to come out, and the three left Ford and confronted 65-year-old Williams. The police took a gun from his waist and mutual fire was fired. Williams was shot in the stomach once and fell to the ground. The three of them returned to the car and ran down the Artesian Boulevard.

At the hearing Monday, prosecutors said an eyewitness familiar with all four suspects identified them from their monitoring videos. A second witness familiar with Barron described him as the person who came out with a pistol through the Fusion’s rear passenger door.

Prosecutors also noted that Barron’s mobile phone was synchronized with Fusion’s data system after it was stolen. The fusion was detected two days after Williams was shot.

Authorities said Barron had an extensive criminal history, including five juvenile convictions dating back to 2014, and four pending cases, one related to home occupation / aggravated kidnapping.
