A video you can watch above shows that Donavan LaBella held a speaker above the head in a protest outside the federal courthouse in Portland on July 12. Other protesters are federal officials in front of LaBella and guarding the courthouse, separated from the street by a large sidewalk. Federal officers wear helmets, body armor, and masks. About 10 seconds before the video, one of the federal officers throws a tin can on the street and sparks in front of LaBella. LaBella grabs the tin from it and throws it in the middle of the street. It does not go with federal officials.
The video shows LaBella and then lifts above the speaker’s head and looks at the officers. A second later, one of the officers opened fire and LaBella fell to the ground. The video then shows other protesters who helped LaBella while the officers were away.

Donavan Labella Mother Statement
Donavan LaBella is being treated at the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, her mother told KPTV. He said he had broken bones on his face, but it is not yet clear whether he suffered brain trauma or permanent eye injuries. He said he was expected to survive and was no longer in critical condition.
Desiree LaBella told KOIN that her son underwent facial reconstructive surgery and a titanium plate was placed on her head. He said he was talking to him on the computer. “There’s still a tube in his skull to drain his blood,” he told the Oregonese.
Donavan LaBella’s mother added in the post, “He still has some impulse control and confusion, but is slowly getting better. It is still unknown if there will be any lasting neurological damage, only time will tell. Thank you everyone for all the support and well wishes.”

LaBella released a GoFundMe in June and asked for help with “roadtripping” and “wanderlust”. LaBella wrote: “In the middle of everything going on, I am aware that it may be selfish to ask for a worksheet to help me realize my travel dream. All I want is to help us travel around the country during this crisis and document what’s happening and help anyone I can do along the way! ”
LaBella’s mother told Oregon Public Broadcasting that she plans to meet a lawyer to open a possible case on behalf of her son. As of July 14, the case had not been filed.
According to the Associated Press, the US Department of Justice will investigate the case. US Oregon Attorney General Billy J. Williams told the AP that the Department of Justice’s General Inspectorate will lead the review.
Williams refused to comment any further. The officer who shot LaBella has not been identified and it is not clear for which institution he works. It is also unknown whether the officer awaiting the outcome of the investigation has been suspended or obtained administrative permission.
