Elizabeth “Betsy” Thorsen is known as the widow of the late Rafer Johnson, a former American decathlete and film actress. He was the 1960 Olympic gold medal in the decathlon, which won the silver medal in 1956.

The breathtaking Olympic gold medalist, who has become an admirable symbol of good sportsmanship and civic generosity, died on Wednesday, December 2, at his home in Sherman Oaks. He was 86 years old. Olympian’s death was confirmed by his family.

On December 18, 1971, Johnson married Elizabeth “Betsy” Thorsen, a middle school teacher in Orange County, California. The couple had two children: Jennifer, born in 1973; and Joshua was born in 1975. The family moved to Sherman Oaks, California in 1973.

Twenty-four years after his gold medal victory, Johnson relieved his Olympic glory days by running the final round of the opening ceremonies for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California and lighting the Olympic torch. He was named to the National High School Hall of Fame in 1990 and received the Free Arts Humanitarian Relief Award for Abused Children in 1992.

In 2000, Johnson achieved what he called a unique dream and greatest moment when he watched his daughter compete at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
