Sergio Contreras Arrested
The 36-year-old man was arrested in the coastal city of Estepona during a series of simultaneous police raids that also took place in Malaga, Granada, and Seville, police said.
“Some 20 people were arrested. They were in possession of nearly a tonne of hashish and 700,000 euros ($775,000),” a police spokeswoman said, indicating the operation was “still underway”.
Police Investigation Reports
Speaking to AFP, a police source said Contreras was “in charge” of the smuggling team.
“He was the head of the organization,” the source told AFP, saying the raids had also turned up various weapons, including sidearms and rifles, as well as paperwork.
Contreras is being held at a police station in Malaga. After starting with Malaga, Contreras spent several seasons in Marseille before moving to the Greek side Aris Thessaloniki in a race that took him to Azerbaijan, Germany, Bolivia and the United States. The police operation was called “Operation MasKoke” in a nod to the nickname of former striker “Koke”, which should not be confused with the current captain of Atlético de Madrid, Jorge Resurrección Merodio, who bears the same nickname.
