Frank Nitty Wiki – Frank Nitty Bio

A peaceful march from Bay View to downtown with widespread community support turned ugly, and Milwaukee County Sheriff’s agents arrested Frank Nitty, one of the leaders of the march. (While he is widely known by this name, his real name is Frank Sensabaugh.

It was the fifth consecutive day of marching after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. The Milwaukee marches also included a call for justice regarding the death of Joel Acevedo at the hands of Milwaukee Police Officer Michael Mattioli at an illegal party in April. Mattioli has been charged with murder, but is on bail. Nitty’s arrest occurred after several hundred protesters walked onto Interstate 794 and headed south on the Hoan Bridge. A live video stream from Nitty showed the group walking down the highway with officers using gas to block them near the apex of the Hoan Bridge. After the group started walking back to the city center, Nitty, wearing a gas mask, is heard discussing the need for peace when an agent shoves him with a cane and the video is cut off.

Frank Nitty Arrest & Charge

Nitty was charged and, if released, is a source of confusion and frustration behind the scenes. Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Earnell Lucas declined to comment to Urban Milwaukee and said a spokesman would follow up later. Urban Milwaukee’s calls to Lucas’s cell phone went unanswered. Multiple sources describe a gap between Mayor Tom Barrett, who joined the first part of the walk, and Lucas on what to do. Barrett reportedly wants the release of Nitty, a popular figure and vocal advocate of the peaceful march. Lucas is independently elected, while Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales was hired by a board of officials named by Barrett.

A source also told Urban Milwaukee that Governor Tony Evers’ administration has also become involved and is concerned about the arrest. Urban Milwaukee also contacted Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, who said he was still trying to get information on what happened. He noted that suspects are often detained and released without charge. Nitty and co-leaders Rafael Mercado and Khalil Coleman led the march from Bay View through Walker’s Point and across downtown to the Milwaukee Police Department Administrative Building at 749 W. State St. During the Bay View march, Businesses and churches distributed food and water to protesters.

Police Statement

At 8:29 p.m. The Milwaukee Police Department reported that it had ordered protesters to disperse and use tear gas. “A suspect with a gun who was in the crowd has been detained by MPD. For our safety and the safety of our residents, we had used gas to disperse the crowd, “the department wrote. But Urban Milwaukee journalist Graham Kilmer was following a shrinking group throughout the downtown area in the time of publication.
