Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman said in a Facebook post that Paul Nicholas Stewart, who was assigned to the sheriff’s office’s support services division, was arrested Friday.
Paul Nicholas Stewart Arrested on Drug Charges
Freeman said he received a call around Friday at 10 a.m. from Butts County sheriff, Gary Long, who said an investigation there revealed that a deputy from Monroe County was involved in illegal drug activities. Two Monroe County investigators were sent to Butts County to help, and investigators from both counties arrested Stewart.
“One of my own, your own, has betrayed the trust we have placed in him,” Freeman wrote.
Stewart was being held without bond in the Butts County jail. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on his arrest.
To make matters worse, Freeman wrote, Stewart ”was wearing insignia identifying himself as a deputy with Monroe County during his illegal activity.”
Freeman said Stewart faces charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony involving a controlled substance.
“It goes without saying that I am extremely disappointed that this incident occurred and I do not and never will condone this sort of behavior in any of my employees,” Freeman said in a news release issued Saturday afternoon, according to the Telegraph newspaper. “Stewart is being dealt (with) in accordance with the law.”
