Mecher and Psaki met because of their common interest in politics. When their paths first crossed in 2006, they were both working with the Democratic Congress Campaign Committee. According to The Washington Post, Psaki had just started a new job in the communications department, and Mecher was an assistant manager of finance.

On their first interactions with the phone, Psaki accidentally gave Mecher the wrong instruction to an incident. Mecher was traveling with Rahm Emanuel, then president of the DCCC. As Psaki explained to the Post, he “had no sense of direction” and was worried that the group would be upset when they finally arrived. However, Mecher said that after meeting Psaki face to face, he quickly forgot the mess because he thought he was attractive.

Mecher and Psaki traveled frequently, but Washington, D.C. He had tables side by side in his headquarters. Mecher told the Post that he would walk past Psaki’s desk and fight for his attention. “Whenever I do, he put on the headset, he’s talking on the phone, the BlackBerry he’s typing, and the real computer in front of him talking to someone else,” Mecher said. “Only Rahm can congratulate you with a few f-bombs,” Mecher said. Mecher added that Emanuel was fond of “getting a share” for promoting Mecher and Psaki.

The couple tied the knot in May 2010. The wedding took place at Woodlawn Farm in Ridge, Maryland, according to the New York Times. A Protestant minister led the ceremony.

According to the wedding announcement, Psaki was at the time working as the White House deputy director of communications. Mecher worked at Capitol Hill. He was chief of staff for Democratic Representative Steve Driehaus from Ohio.


Mecher was born in September 1976 and grew up in southern Ohio. According to the wedding announcement, Mecher’s mother taught in 4th grade at a Catholic primary school in Cincinnati. His father, Hebron, worked as a mechanical engineer in Kentucky.
