Hugh McWilliams, managing director of H&A Mechanical Services, was involved in the crash on the Five Mile Straight.
Mr. McWilliams’ company was the main sponsor of both the local GAA club, St Colm’s, Ballinascreen and all Derry GAA teams.
“Derry GAA is devastated by the untimely death of Hugh McWilliams,” the County Executive Board statement.
“Hugh was a generosity giant. His support for the county, club and community knew no bounds. GAA was a way of life for Hugh, and his untimely death will be a shock across the county,” he said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are now with Anne, her family and everyone in the Ballinascreen club.”
Mr. McWilliams and his wife Anne were featured in the Sunday Times Rich List in 2017 and 2018.
St Colm’s GAC said in a statement they were “devastated”.
“Ballinascreen GAC was devastated when it learned of the sudden death of our friend, club sponsor and valued member Hugh McWilliams,” they said.
“Club Manager and all our members express our deepest sympathy for Hugh’s wife Anne, Maureen’s daughter, son Carlus, son-in-law Brendan, bride Maria, grandson Ollie, Leo, Lily and Fiadh, and the extended family circle.”
“As a sign of respect, all Club games and activities have been suspended and the club facilities will be closed until further notice. Ár dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
The Derry Camogie team said they were “deeply upset” by the news.
“Hugh and his wife Anne have been great ambassadors for our county for many seasons and their generous sponsorships with their successful H&A business helped us pave the way for many successful junior and senior teams at both club and county level,” the statement said.
“Therefore, as a sign of respect, the Derry County Camogie Board has made the decision to postpone all fixtures made this weekend, including both adults and minors.
“Our sincere condolences to Ann, to Hugh’s family and to the wider family circle, as well as to all of Ballinascreen GAA. Gael’s Mary Queen, Pray for Him.”
Police confirmed that a person died in a single-vehicle traffic accident on the Five Mile Straight road in Draperstown around 1.10 am on Friday.
“Unfortunately, the dead man was the driver of the car. Hugh Vincent was named McWilliams in his 60s,” said a PSNI spokesperson.
“Investigations are ongoing and we will refer anyone with any information to contact the police on phone number 101, citing reference number 956 14/08/20,” said Inspector Gavin Sterling.
