Midland officials made a statement Thursday saying that the Midland Police Department is investigating a case involving a child involved, but did not provide further information. The statement provided to CBS7 states: “The Midland Fire Department responded to a medical aid call on October 20, 2020, and sought assistance from the Midland Police Department, which included a child, due to the nature of the call. MPD has responded and the investigation is ongoing. ”

A spokesperson for the Midland Police Department told NewsWest9: “To the extent that there is a criminal investigation involving sexual assault on a child, the City cannot interpret or verify any information.” Heavy also reached out to MPD for more information but didn’t get a prompt response.
Midland Independent School District spoke at a press conference Thursday about the situation but did not provide additional information about Melendez’s death. About 37 minutes after the press conference, a question was asked about “a student allegedly attacked near [Midland High School] was sent to Metroplex and died”.

The family also created a GoFundMe page for Melendez’s mother to help raise money for “medical bills, funeral expenses and other costs incurred.”
CBS7’s Shane Battis posted on Facebook on Sunday about a barbecue and car show in Midland to help raise the family’s funeral expenses. A march has been planned for Melendez on Friday, October 23rd. The march will start at 18:00. It will end at the courthouse and at the Midland Police Department.
