Jerald Sandage Arrested

A former University of Illinois police officer already charged with official misconduct has had four additional charges of sex assault lodged against him.

Jerald Sandage Resigned

Sandage resigned from the UI police department in late February in the wake of official-misconduct charges filed in December that alleged he used police resources to target women between February 2017 and January 2018. He had worked there 12 years.

State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said Sandage is being held in lieu of $3 million bond in the Piatt County Jail and is expected to appear in court Thursday in Champaign County.

Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said Sandage is being held in Monticello for his own safety.

Illinois state police began their investigation of Sandage in September 2018, when police said his name appeared in a sexual assault report. At that time, Sandage was put on leave. ISP investigated Sandage over the course of a year and a second woman accused the former officer of sexually assaulting her in 2012. The ISP released the evidence to the University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) in October 2019 when both victims refused to participate in the investigation.

In December 2019, the investigation found evidence of Sandage allegedly misusing police resources, including photos of women taken without their consent.

The ISP Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) worked in close conjunction with the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office, University of Illinois Police Department, and Champaign County Sheriff’s Department to investigate this case.
