Joel-Lehi Organista Arrested
A Salt Lake City school board member has been arrested on charges of sexual abuse of a minor after some alleged possession of child pornography images, including children under the age of 5.
Joél-Léhi Organista, a newly elected member of the school district board, was jailed on Wednesday (June 2nd). Although not formally charged, he is being held on suspicion of eight felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
An investigation was launched against Organista after a CyberTipLine report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children informed the police. Investigators found a Dropbox account owned by the suspect that contained at least five child pornography images, according to the arrest report.
The documents say one of the paintings depicts an adult man sexually abusing a young girl. The report also detailed a Snapchat account belonging to the suspect, in which he communicated with children who said they were between the ages of 12 and 17. Allegedly, the suspect asked them for nude photos and asked them to have sex.
Calls for Joél-Léhi Organista’s resignation
Reportedly, the illegal interactions and downloads occurred between January and early June, when Organista took her seat on the Salt Lake City School District’s education board. The board’s leadership urged Organista to resign after the charges were made public on Thursday (June 3rd).
“As individual school board members whose job it is to protect and enrich the lives of children, we condemn the crimes against which Mr Organista is accused,” Melissa Ford, chairman of the board, said at a press conference. “It is unjustifiable to engage in such behavior or to exploit or endanger any child.”
He added that the board leadership did not have the authority to dismiss Organista. The most other members can do is vote to denounce him if he chooses to stay in his seat for his four-year term. However, if he is convicted of a crime, it will lead to his removal from public office. But Organista is prohibited from stepping on any school district property.
According to the probable cause of his arrest, police said Organista admitted to “downloading, viewing and storing images and videos containing child pornography”.
“That’s enough for our board,” spokesperson Yándary Chatwin said. “There is no gray area.” Organista is currently held without bail because police asked the judge to keep her in jail for “having access to minors in her current trust position, which includes grades K-12.”
