Jonathan Dwight Jones (born July 19, 1987) is an American professional mixed martial artist, who is signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists, he is the current and two-time undisputed UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. He has been champion since December 29, 2018, and previously held the title from March 20, 2011, to April 28, 2015. Jones also held the interim UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. As of August 19, 2019, he is #1 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and negligent use of a firearm after officers heard a shot and found him in a parked car with a gun and a bottle of Half-empty liquor early Thursday. Albuquerque police said. Jones, 32, also faces charges of possessing an open container of alcohol and no proof of insurance for a vehicle, police said.

Investigation

Jones was found in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle with the engine running just before 1 am Thursday morning, according to police. Authorities said Jones showed signs of poisoning and that there was a gun and a half-empty liquor bottle in the vehicle.

“As part of the investigation into this incident, our Gun Violence Reduction Unit will test the firearm and bullet casing to determine whether the gun has been used in any crimes,” an Albuquerque police spokesperson said. “Reducing gun violence in Albuquerque is our top priority.”

Jones is considered one of the best UFC fighters of his time. He is 26-1 and retained his title in February by beating Dominick Reyes by unanimous decision. He was stripped of his world title in 2015 after a hit-and-run incident.

Before beginning his MMA career, Jones was a stand-out high school wrestler and state champion at Union-Endicott High School in upstate New York. He also played football as a defensive lineman; due to his slight frame, his coach nicknamed him “Bones”. He won a national JUCO championship at Iowa Central Community College. After transferring to Morrisville State College to study Criminal Justice, he dropped out of college to begin his MMA career.

Jones made his professional MMA debut in April 2008. He amassed an undefeated record of 6–0 over a period of three months, finishing all of his opponents. In July 2008, Jones accepted a fight in the UFC as a late replacement with only two weeks’ notice.

In his last bout before signing with the UFC, Jones defeated Moyses Gabin at BCX 5 for the USKBA Light Heavyweight Championship. He won the fight via TKO in the second round.
