Joshua D. Swartwout Suspected & Arrest
Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Tod Hileman told ABC News on Sunday that the soldiers who arrested Swartwout did not initially ask how they operated the emergency vehicle.
Hileman said, “I can assume that he has only used his knees as a high-speed driving instructor for 20 years. Said.
According to a Highway Patrol statement, the Houdini-like escape occurred just after Saturday afternoon, when a Kansas Highway Patrol soldier was taking Swartwout to a detention facility after being arrested on suspicion of auto theft following a previous pursuit.
Hileman said there was no back seat cage or bulkhead in the patrol car.
“It was carried in the front seat of the car,” Hileman said.
While Hileman was on Highway 25 near Atwood in Northwest Kansas, the soldier witnessed a serious motorcycle accident and pulled over to help, leaving Swartwout alone in his patrol car.
“Normally we don’t do this, but this soldier saw this accident happen right in front of him and he was in a rural area,” Hileman said. Said. “Since you have been trained as a highway patrol soldier, your help is ingrained.”
While the soldier was helping the victim of the accident, according to the highway patrol description, the handcuffed Swartwout sat behind him in the driver’s seat and drove away.
The soldier immediately spoke to the radio for help. Authorities said that soldiers racing towards the scene saw the stolen patrol car heading south on Highway 25.
Hileman said the chase peaked at 100 miles per hour on what he described as a narrow two-lane highway with ditches on either side.
