Kevin Piner is one of three Wilmington Police Department officers fired on Wednesday (June 24th) after recording racist speeches during George Floyd’s protests. Kevin Piner, 44, and James Gilmore, 48, were police officers, while Jesse Moore, third, 50, was corporal. All three had been members of the Wilmington PD in North Carolina for over twenty years.

The layoffs took place one day after a new Black Police Chief Donny Williams made a unanimous decision, but the investigation began on June 4, when the sergeant responsible for monthly video inspections found files tagged as “accidental activations” and heard conversations between officers. It was filled with racist remarks and humiliating comments about the WPD and some of its officers.
Speeches Contain Racist Comments Officer Piner explained how he was prepared for a civil war and soon said, “We will just go out and start killing them. I can not wait. God, I can’t wait. ” According to the Wilmington Police Department Occupational Standards Internal Investigation, the records consist of two different talks: Gilmore’s first pulled the police cruiser next to Piner between Piner and Gilmore.

The second recorded conversation belongs to the day that Moore called Piner on the phone. Piner’s comments on a civil war and killing Black people came during her conversation with Moore. According to the internal investigation report, Piner said that he is “ready” after his statements about not being able to wait for the next civil war and plans to become a new assault rifle in the coming weeks. “He felt that the society needed a civil war to ‘wipe’ them off the map,” he told Moore. This will bring them back four or five generations, ”said Piner. Moore told Piner he wouldn’t do any of this and said, “You’re crazy.” Said.

When questioned about the records, all three officers admitted that they had voices and comments. Officer Moore stated that when he called Piner, he was dismissed and at home. He said he wasn’t racist, he just took off to his friend for his arrest.
Piner said he was very stressed because he felt that his family was threatened after seeing a video of a Black man who told the investigators to protest and “Find people to find civil servants’ homes and kill their families.” Piner said he was embarrassed when he listened to the video again. He said that he had reached the Employee Assistance Program recently because he thought he was at the “breaking point”. “The comments were not characteristic of him and he was out of control,” said Piner, according to the report.
