In a statement published in the “Alabama Daily News” on December 7, Perry Hooper, a former state representative and member of the Republican State Executive Committee, wrote that he was “still in shock” over Dixon’s death.
“Although Larry was not a Montgomery native, he loved his adopted hometown as much as anyone else,” Hooper said. He devoted his life to serving this great city. He was a great legislator, a man of great moral character, a faithful and loving husband and father. ”
The Alabama Board of Medical Supervisors, which licenses medical practitioners, said on Friday that they were “forever grateful” as Dixon’s 35-year executive director.
“It set an amazing example of service for all of us. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Gaynell and his family during this difficult period”.
Dixon’s death came just hours after Alabama broke state records for hospitalization rates and the number of new Covid-19 cases.
As of Monday, the state has recorded about 270,000 Covid-19 infections and 3,889 deaths, according to a score by Johns Hopkins University.
State residents tested positive at 34.7 percent in the past seven days – one of the highest in the country, according to the control panel.
Thrasher added that Dixon was the “best man” whose last wish was to prevent more Alabamans from pursuing their destiny.
“He wanted to encourage people to be careful, to wear masks, not to gather socially,” Thrasher said. “Let’s save some lives,” he said. ”
Larry Dixon Death
Dixon’s close friend and chest physician in Montgomery, Dr. David Thrasher told NBC News that Dixon’s wife, Gaynell Dixon, told Thrasher his last words were a predictive warning for the people of Alabama.
“We screwed up, we took down our bodyguard,” Dixon said, according to Thrasher. Please tell everyone to be careful. This is real and if diagnosed, get help right away. ”
Thrasher said his friend was exposed to the virus about two weeks ago at a social gathering with a “few guys” outside.
Thrasher said he wasn’t sure how many people attended, but said he knew the other two people who attended the meeting and tested positive.
Thrasher said he treated Dixon for Covid-19 symptoms a few days after the social meeting. According to Thrasher, as his condition worsened, the former senator was placed on a ventilator.
Thrasher said that Dixon’s wife Gaynell also tested positive for Covid-19 last week and is still recovering.
Dixon’s two daughters contracted the virus earlier this year, but have since recovered and haven’t been re-infected since their parents’ diagnosis, according to Thrasher.
