Letlow’s spokesperson Andrew Bautsch said in a statement, “The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support recently, but they want privacy in this difficult and unexpected time.” “Along with the funeral arrangements, a statement from the family will be announced later.”

Louisiana’s eight-member congressional delegation described Letlow’s death as devastating. “Luke had a very positive spirit and an extremely bright future ahead of him,” they said in a statement.

“He was looking forward to serving the people of Louisiana in Congress, and we were excited to invite him to our delegation, where he was ready to make an even greater impact on our state and nation.”

The state’s newest congressman, who will take office in January, was admitted to a hospital in Monroe on December 19 after testing positive for Covid-19. He was later transferred to a hospital in Shreveport and taken to intensive care.

Dr GE Ghali of LSU Health Shreveport told the Attorney that Letlow did not have any underlying health conditions that would put him at greater risk of Covid complications.

Letlow, of the small Start town in Richland Parish, was chosen to fill the seat vacated by Ralph Abraham in the second-round elections in December. Letlow was Abraham’s chief of staff and ran for the job with his boss’s support.

The leaders of the US House of Representatives expressed their condolences Tuesday night. “A consolation for Luke’s wife Julia, her children Jeremiah and Jacqueline, so many mourn their losses and pray for them at this sad time,” Nancy Pelosi said.

More than 7,000 people have died from Covid-19 in Louisiana since March, according to data from the state health ministry.

When he announced his positive test, Letlow joined a list of Louisiana officials who have been caught in the coronavirus, including Sen Bill Cassidy, since the pandemic began.

Cassidy, a Republican and doctor who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this year and has since recovered, posted in a Twitter video: “It just means that only Covid can kill. Not for most people, but it really can happen. So don’t forget to pay attention to Covid, just as you remember his widow Luke, his children, in your prayers. “
