Mark Hurd, one of the two CEOs who leads the Oracle database software giant, is taking a license for health reasons. This is according to a letter he wrote to Oracle employees on September 12, 2019. His medical license is produced amid speculation about his health with some fees that mention his weight loss. Oracle has not specified the health problems that led to Hurd’s medical discharge, or for the time he is expected to be absent, even when speculation grew that Hurd suffers from cancer.

Mark Hurd died on Friday, October 18, 2019, at the age of 62. In an email obtained by CNBC, Oracle President Larry Ellison informed employees that Hurd had died early in the morning.

“Oracle has lost a brilliant and beloved leader who personally touched the lives of so many of us during his decade at Oracle,” Ellison wrote. “All of us will miss Mark’s keen mind and rare ability to analyze, simplify, and solve problems quickly. Some of us will miss his friendship and mentorship. I will miss his kindness and sense of humor.”

He and Safra Catz were appointed as CEOs of Oracle in September 2014. Oracle stock had gone up about 37% since then.
