The sheriff says agents came out to help, but the suspect was waiting for an ambush in downtown Paso Robles.
They got out of their vehicle and searched the area where the shooter was last seen when they were shot and the officer was injured, he said. Paso Robles is a city of about 30,000 inhabitants surrounded by what the city says is one of the main wine regions of the state. It is about 100 miles north of Santa Barbara.
