Gargiulo is accused of stabbing three women to death and attempting to kill a fourth. He is originally from Glenview, Illinois, where he could have stabbed his neighbor, Tricia Pacaccio, 18, to death at the back door. His father found the body the next morning, on August 14, 1993. Gargiulo moved to Los Angeles in 1998, allegedly to escape police scrutiny in Illinois, and committed two murders and assassination attempts in southern California between 2001 and 2008.

On February 21, 2001, he stabbed Ashley Ellerin 47 times at his home in Hollywood. Ellerin’s wounds included a neck wound that almost cut off his head, and deep punctures in his chest, stomach, and back that in some cases were up to six inches deep. According to Detective Tom Small, a stab wound “really penetrated the skull and removed a piece of the skull as a puzzle piece. On the night she was killed, Ellerin had planned to have dinner, then drink with actor Ashton Kutcher.

On December 1, 2005, Gargiulo stabbed his neighbor at his home in El Monte, California.  She was stabbed 17 times.

Gargiulo attempted to assassinate his neighbor at his home in Santa Monica on April 28, 2008. She fought the attack, and blood was found that matches Gargiulo’s DNA at the scene.

Gargiulo was arrested by the Santa Monica Police Department on June 6, 2008. On July 7, 2011, the Cook County State Attorney accused Gargiulo of the first-degree murder of Tricia Pacaccio. Although Gargiulo is accused of the two murders in California and the murder of Pacaccio in Chicago, the police have not linked him to any other murder. Gargiulo allegedly told the Los Angeles county jail authorities that just because 10 women were killed, and his DNA was present, does not mean he killed anyone, leading investigators to believe there are more victims. The media in Los Angeles called Gargiulo the “Hollywood Ripper,” as well as the “Chiller Killer.” Gargiulo is being held at the Los Angeles County jail awaiting trial for capital murder. On June 9, 2017, a pretrial hearing was held at the Los Angeles Superior Court, and his trial would begin in October 2017. After the delays, his trial began on May 2, 2019. In May 2019, Actor Ashton Kutcher testified about the crimes On August 15, 2019, Gargiulo was convicted of all charges. The penalty phase of his trial is scheduled to begin on October 7, 2019. He faces a death sentence or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Once his sentence is over, he will be extradited back to Illinois to face the first-degree murder charge related to Tricia Pacaccio.
