Authorities said two people who appeared in the Netflix documentary series “Cheer” were arrested and charged in separate sex crimes cases involving minors.

The arrest of Mitchell Ryan and Robert Joseph Scianna on Wednesday came about five months after federal prosecutors in Chicago accused “Cheer” star Jeremiah “Jerry” Harris of “persuading a minor to take sexually explicit videos and self-photographs”. He was later charged with additional charges.
The “Cheer” documentary series is about the cheerleading team of Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. The series started on Netflix in January 2020.

Arrest & Charge

Ryan, 23, was arrested by police in Coppell, Texas, on July 24, on charges of aggravated sexual assault on a child, according to Dallas County Sheriff’s Department records.
Details of the case were not immediately available. CNN reached out to police and prosecutors for additional information.
Ryan was booked on Thursday and released the next morning in a $ 50,000 bond.

“Mitch and his family were surprised by this arrest,” Ryan’s attorney Jeremy Rosenthal told CNN Saturday. “Every story has two sides, and we’re sure Mitch’s name will be cleared.”

Ryan was a member of the Navarro College team from the TV series “Cheer”, but he is not on the current list.
Scianna, two-time World Champion, was arrested in Virginia after she requested online sex from a child via her social media platform, according to Chesterfield County Police.

Police said Scianna, 25, was accused of using an electronic communication device to take improper liberties and seek sex with a child. In a statement made by the police, she said she had arranged for sex with a child she knew on social media.

The police said she was kept loose at Chesterfield County Prison.
CNN reached out to Scianna for comment. It was not clear whether he had a lawyer.
Chesterfield County Police are still investigating and asked anyone with knowledge to contact them.

Scianna’s website says she is the National Cheerleading Association Champion, Senior Champion and two-time World Champion, who has cheered for numerous programs in the US and toured coaching and choreography routines to over 13 countries.

Scianna appeared in an episode of “Cheer,” where she posed for a late-night photoshoot with another famous cheerleader, Gabi Butler.
In December, Harris was charged with new federal charges of allegedly persuading minors to engage in sexual activity, including asking them to send them sexually explicit photos or videos, according to court documents.

A lawsuit filed by two accusers in September alleged that Harris “abused her popularity and fame position with young male cheering athletes” and that she often tried to meet Harris in secluded places at various competitions with Harris and demanded sexual intercourse with these boys. . ”

A spokesperson for Harris said in September: “We categorically object to the allegations against Jerry Harris, which allegedly occurred when he was young.”
“We, like everyone else, are shocked by this news. Abuse of minors is a terrible crime and we respect the legal process,” a Netflix spokesperson said after the lawsuit was filed.
