A boy shot dead while trying to escape from a registered sex offender who allegedly tried to abduct him last Saturday.
According to ABC 27, Harrisburg, Pa. Neighborhood residents witnessed a naked and scared 16-year-old Kyan King running while being chased by a man identified as Orlando Duarte, who was shooting a gun early Saturday afternoon.
Penn Live reports that King was stuck in front of a white fence between the two houses when he allegedly shot Duarte. Neighbor Tracy Burton told the news outlet that the teenager was “begging for his life.”
Burton said he called 911 after he ran away from King’s house. He and other residents of the neighborhood rushed outside to help the young man after hearing his request for help.
According to the Harrisburg Police Bureau, 46-year-old Duarte allegedly shot the teenagers multiple times. When the police arrived at the scene, residents pointed to the place where armed Duarte had escaped on foot.
The suspect was later caught and detained. Duarte was charged with criminal murder and possession of prohibited firearms, behind bars in the Dauphin County Prison, which is currently held without bail.
Penn Live reported that Duarte was registered as a sex offender for involuntary deviant sexual intercourse in 2015.
In 2012, he was sentenced to four to eight years in prison and 10 years of probation for involuntary deviant sexual intercourse with a child and improper assault on less than 13 charges.
Prior to that, in 2008, Duarte was sentenced to six to 23 months in prison and parole after making no appeal for simple assault and improper assault on fewer than 16 crimes.
Duarte will appear in court later on September 28. A vigil was held for King on Saturday night.
Destiny Williams, family member, told ABC27 that King had “a smile so big that you can hear it all the way on the third floor”.
