Statement from Public Security
After hours of intense battles, the secretary of security and public protection, Alfonso Durazo, read a written statement confirming the arrest of Ovid Guzmán López, one of the least known children of the infamous drug trafficker.
Durazo said the arrest took place during a routine patrol of federal forces that was attacked from a house. He said that after taking control of the situation, four people were arrested, including Chapo’s son.
Mexican police have taken El Chapo’s son Ovidio Guzmán Lopez earlier today in the city of Cualiacan, Mexico. This has lead to members from El Chapo’s cartel to get in massive gun fire with Mexican police throughout the city in the hopes of freeing the son 👀 pic.twitter.com/pWNupT2mZC

Durazo also said that this led criminal groups to attack patrols and carry out violent acts in the city. He said they were so serious that in order to safeguard the citizens of Culiacán, the authorities decided to “suspend our actions.” This led to confusion about whether young Guzman was fired.
At the same time, photographs circulated on social networks that sought to show Ovid detained in a light blue shirt, with what appeared to be religious medallions around his neck.
Thursday’s shootings initially sparked rumors that they were caused by the arrest of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, another of Chapo’s children. It is not clear if he was arrested.
