The Irish Red Cross spokesman said: “John walked through most of his political work, and Pat, with his eyes and ears remained on the ground, and briefed him on political issues.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and prominent Northern Ireland politician John Hume died at 83.
He died in the early hours of Monday at the Owen Mor Nursing Home in Londonderry.
One of the highest-profile politicians in Northern Ireland for over 30 years, he helped create the climate that ended the Problems.
He was one of the founding members of the Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP) in 1970 and led the party from 1979 to November 2001.

Hume played an important role in the peace talks that led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was in office when the peace agreement was signed, paid a warm tribute to the late SDLP leader.
“John Hume was a political titan; a visionary who refused to believe that the future had to be the same as the past, “said Blair.
“His contribution to peace in Northern Ireland was epic and he will be rightly remembered for it.
“He insisted that it was possible, tireless in his search and infinitely creative in the search for ways to make it happen.”
Following the 1998 peace agreement, Mr. Hume received the Nobel Peace Prize, along with then-leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, David Trimble.
