He was found dead in a sugar cane field days after he disappeared in Quawan, Louisiana.
“Quawan’s face looks tortured,” said his cousin Celine Charles.
A preliminary autopsy published on Friday shows that he was most likely drowned. A forensic officer found that the wounds on his face occurred after death and were likely caused by animals because he was in the water.
Tommy Romero, sheriff of the Iberia Congregation, said Saturday investigators considered the case a murder “at the time” when the boy’s body was found.
Activist Jamal Taylor also called on a Baldwin police officer to seek administrative clearance, claiming that the police did not investigate the initial missing person report, and possibly at a football match instead.
Bobby’s death received national attention. The New York Times, The Washington Post, and TMZ reported her death.
The American Civil Liberties Union is also demanding an independent investigation, according to Alanah Odoms Hebert, executive director of the Louisiana ACLU.
Anyone with additional information about the teen’s death should call the investigators at (337) 369-3711. There’s also a $ 5,000 reward for anyone who knows about his death.
An online fundraising event was set up earlier this month by Quawan’s family to raise money for a second autopsy, and as of Monday it has raised more than $ 262,000. The website shows a graphic photograph of the teen’s face next to Emmitt Till, a black teenager who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955.
