Samantha Moreno Rodriguez Wanted For Murder

The body was that of seven-year-old Liam Husted, who was last seen driving with his mother, Samantha Moreno Rodriguez, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said on Monday.

Metro police Lieutenant Raymond Spencer said at a news conference Monday that Las Vegas police were working with San Jose police over the weekend to verify his identity.

“We’ve spent a tremendous amount of resources in the last 10 days,” Spencer said. “We had detectives working on hundreds of leads to identify the victim… After looking at these photos, we believed it was very likely that the missing person case they were working in San Jose was related to our murder investigation.”

Spencer said Rodriguez left San Jose with his son on May 24, traveling first to Southern California and then to Nevada.

“We can place them in the Laguna Beach area by the afternoon of May 26,” Spencer said. “We know that the vehicle was in the Victorville, California area that afternoon.”

A hiker found the boy’s body at 160 State Road near Mountain Springs, just west of Las Vegas, on May 28. Investigators think his body was recently placed there and is the victim of a murder.

Investigators were tipped off by a family friend who hadn’t seen Rodriguez or his son in a while and saw reports of a man’s body found in the desert.

“Family friend said she hadn’t seen Samantha or Liam in over two weeks,” Spencer said. “He saw the news of our trial here in Las Vegas and saw the composite sketch that was sent to the media. After seeing that, he believed the drawing looked like Liam.”

“We discovered shortly afterward, on May 29, that the car was traveling on I-70 near Grand Junction, Colorado,” Spencer said. “The last person Samantha saw was when she checked in alone in a Denver area hotel room on May 31.”

Police urged anyone with additional information about Rodriguez to come forward. Liam’s father was not considered a suspect in his murder.

“I’ll tell you it was a heartbreaking conversation,” Spencer said of the boy’s conversation with his father. “This has been a very emotional last 10 days for myself and all the researchers working on it. And we’re happy that we were able to come to a conclusion for Liam and then hold the person responsible for this crime accountable.”
