A Utah police officer allegedly kidnapped a member of his family on Thanksgiving in an incident that he described as a “paranoid” incident involving an involuntary outing, a gun, and abandoned buildings.
An unnamed relative told the police that his nephew Scott Elliott Russell, a veteran officer in the South Jordan Police Department, took them on a drive before the family’s Thanksgiving dinner in Provo, Utah, but when his relative demanded to return home, Russell refused and told to drive along I-15 highway continued. The police did not reveal the identity of the relative.
According to the arrest report, first reported by the KUTV 2 local police station, Russell later “became more unreasonable and paranoid at some point by picking up the victim’s phone and turning it off”. Knowing that the police officer had a gun, the relative fulfilled Russell’s demands. . Russell then refused to pick up the phone.
Russell and his relative left the highway and got out of the car, at which point Russell rolled him down an embankment and threw his gun over a fence.
In his arrest report, he wrote: “[Russell] claimed that he believed he had been trapped and being actively monitored by an unknown organization … again claimed that [he] was being watched by individuals and asked those people to clearly see him with a firearm so they could know that it was not a threat. ”
Russell and his relative walked into a couple of abandoned buildings. After Russell stepped into one and left the relative in another, the relative walked onto the freeway and was picked up by a passing driver and was later hospitalized for unspecified injuries.
Russell was arrested on charges of grave kidnapping, aggravated assault, theft, trespassing, and disrupting a communications device. He is being held in Juab County Prison and was taken on leave from the Southern Jordan police force.
