Scott Peterson Wiki – Scott Peterson Biography
California Supreme Court overturned the death sentence Monday for Scott Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife Laci and their unborn son Conner on Christmas Eve.
The court’s decision is Calif, a school teacher. Modesto came 15 years after Laci was murdered. Investigators said that Peterson dumped the body of his wife from a fishing boat into San Francisco Bay in 2002. Laci and Conner’s bodies were revealed months later.
While the murder conviction for Peterson remained in place, the court ordered a new sentencing phase.
The court maintains that “the Peterson trial was flawed for many reasons, starting with the unusually large amount of pre-trial public opinion surrounding the case.” “We reject Peterson’s allegation of guilt and thereby uphold his conviction for murder.”
However, the court ruled that the trial judge in Peterson’s case “made a series of clear and important mistakes in the jury selection, under long-standing United States Supreme Court case law, which undermined Peterson’s right to an impartial jury at the sentencing stage.”
The court also acknowledged that potential jurors had been improperly expelled from the jury pool after they said they did not personally participate in the death penalty but would be willing to enforce it under California law.
Peterson, now 47 years old, claimed on appeal that he could not have a fair trial due to the mass publicity surrounding his case, but his trial was held about 90 miles from his Central Valley home Modesto to San Mateo County. South of San Francisco.
Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit Fladager did not immediately say whether she wanted a death sentence again.
Since Peterson was sentenced to death by lethal injection in 2005, he has been placed in the death ward of San Quentin State Penitentiary.
Peterson’s case made national headlines, and intense pressure was placed on investigators to find his killer. They followed around 10,000 leads and accepted parole and sexual offenders as possible suspects.
On December 24, 2002, Peterson called her mother-in-law Sharon Rocha early in the evening to ask if Laci was with her. He told Rocha that he had returned from a day of fishing and when he returned home, Laci’s car was on the driveway and his dogs were leashed in the backyard.
Around 5:15 pm Rocha is being searched. It would set off a chain of events that would set an entire community in motion to find the missing mother. When she disappeared as days and weeks passed, Laci’s search, who was 8 and a half months pregnant, became even more desperate.
Peterson claimed he was home the morning he went on a fishing trip in San Francisco Bay, and that was the last time he saw him.
Laci’s family appeared on TV, begging for any information to help him return and find him.
“Please bring my daughter home,” Rocha asked at a press conference.
Soon attention turned to Peterson, who claimed to have nothing to do with Laci’s disappearance.
A month after Laci’s disappearance, police revealed that her husband lived a double life in Fresno, in a relationship with a massage therapist living under the name Amber Frey.
Frey, a single mother, went to the police when she realized that the man she thought was her boyfriend was quickly becoming the prime suspect in a nationally televised lawsuit.
He would eventually go on wearing a wire and help the police record his conversations with Peterson, which would play a key role in the trial.
On April 13, 2003, the body of a baby boy was found on the shores of San Francisco Bay. The next day, the body of an adult woman wearing maternity clothes was found nearby. The bodies are certain to belong to Laci and her unborn son Conner.
Peterson was arrested in San Diego a few days after the bodies were discovered.
He had dyed his hair blonde, had grown a goatee, and had many items in his car that convinced researchers that he might be ready to run.
The double murder trial will take more than a year to begin, but eventually Scott Peterson was found guilty of first-degree murder for murdering his wife and second-degree murder for killing Conner.
Claiming to be innocent, Peterson has always maintained his innocence.
