The incident occurred Friday when Michigan State Police officers received a phone call at around 9:00 pm. The agency said a 10-year-old girl lost her father.
Soldiers, State Natural Resources Department officers, and city firefighters responded to the scene near the Detroit Yacht Club.
The off-duty sergeant and his 10-year-old daughter were talking while walking near the Yacht Club when they heard three teenage girls screaming for help from the water, Fornell told the Detroit News.
The event lasted about 45 minutes. Authorities only found out that Johnson’s daughter was missing and called 911 only after the children were safe with their parents.
“It is believed that your father may have been drifted underwater, and nobody noticed,” Michigan State Police said.
Johnson’s daughter was handed over to her grandfather.

The Detroit Police Department Diving Team found the body of the 48-year-old father at around 1 pm on Saturday. Detroit Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Dave Fornell said after a six-hour search.
Fornell said Johnson’s heroic sacrifice would be labeled as a death on duty with the department, although he was off duty at the time of the incident.
“They are now transporting her body to the hospital with a companion,” Fornell said.

Fornell said Johnson was a 26-year veteran in the Detroit Fire Department.
“He’s a fireman, he saw the girls in distress and jumped. He’s done that all his career,” Fornell said. “Something happened, and it’s unfortunate to lose one of ours that way.”
Another civilian and a nearby boat helped the rescue.
“We talked from the civilian last night, there was too much current and the sergeant got into the water,” Fornell said. “One girl was rescued by a civilian, and the other two girls took the boat.”
