Prosecutors said he admitted the crimes. He has not yet responded to the charges in court.

Wearing a coronavirus facial mask, Stephan B. sat in a handcuffed chair in the courtroom and looked around the room. The start of the trial was delayed for two hours due to strict security measures.

The gunman fired at the synagogue in Halle, the eastern city of last October, and prosecutors say they aim to kill as many as more than 50 worshipers inside.

However, after he could not enter the building, anger raged outside, a deadly woman shot a passerby woman and a man inside a kebab shop. The attacker broadcast his attack live.

Josef Schuster, chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said the killer must face all the power of the law, and the Halle attack showed how right-wing populists and extremists have become more faceless.

“The state should not relax in its fight against right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism and racism. A clear decision on Stephan B.’s actions will send a clear signal to violence and right-wing extremism in Germany.” Said.

Anti-Jewish crimes are particularly vulnerable in Germany because of the Holocaust’s legacy. The local police criticized it because it left the place of worship unprotected and did not understand it was the holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur.

German interior minister said in May that the number of anti-Semitic crimes committed in Germany, which put the blame on right-wing radicals, increased by 13% last year.
