Tommy Thompson Wiki – Tommy Thompson Bio

A former Ohio treasure hunter is about to mark his half-decade behind bars after refusing to reveal the whereabouts of the 500 coins lost in a historic shipwreck.

Research scientist Tommy Thompson has been held in federal prison since 2015 for court contempt for lost loot. He was living in hiding in Florida for three years before the US Marshal followed and arrested him to Boca Raton.

“I don’t know where the gold is,” Thompson insisted at his last hearing in October. “I feel like I don’t have the keys to my freedom,” Thompson’s legal battle began after her discovery in 1988 of SS Central America, which sank in 1857 in South Carolina with thousands of pounds of precious metal on board. A group of 161 investors paid Thompson $ 12.7 million to find his so-called “Gold Ship,” and later sued him, claiming they didn’t see any returns. In 2012, the federal judge interrogated him to reveal the location of the coins. After that, he fled to Florida and lived with a female friend until 2015, when he was tracked down and arrested by US police at a Hilton hotel in West Boca Raton.

Tommy Thompson Arrested

The 68-year-old pleaded guilty for failing to appear on trial and was sentenced to two years in prison. He was fined $ 250,000. As part of the appeal agreement, it should answer questions about lost loot and also “assist” interested parties in finding the coins. Several times during his trial in court on December 15, 2015, he said he did not know where the coins were. Federal Judge Algenon Marbley disrespected him and ordered him to be imprisoned and pay a $ 1,000 daily fine until he answered the questions correctly and revealed the location of the coins.

He spent more than 1,700 days in prison, and owes approximately $ 1.8 million in fines and counts. He also claimed to suffer from a rare chronic fatigue syndrome due to problems with his short-term memory. However, prosecutors claimed that there was no link between his ailment and his refusal to tell the location of the coins.

The legal team of investors who paid him to find the gold coins said Thompson was responsible for his arrest. “If only he had complied with the defense agreement and had cooperated in finding the missing assets, he would have been released from prison by now,” said attorney Steven Tigges in a court file.
