Mr Webster was born in Plymouth and grew up in the Millbridge area until he was 18 before moving to London where in 1980 he joined the Metropolitan Police, serving in the CID for most of his career.

While there he was responsible for Project Sapphire, which led to improvements in the way rape victims are treated by the police, and has investigated many serious rapes, including the notorious ‘Beast of Belgravia’ case. He also worked for the Regional Crime Squad investigating international drug-related crime, including ‘Yardie’ gangland murder and drug networks.

Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer said: “We have today been made aware of the sudden death in north Cornwall of an individual who we believe to be Jim Connelly-Webster.

“Jim was a former assistant to the Acting Police Chief and had served in the Devon and Cornwall Police, including as Chief of Crime and Chief Superintendent in Plymouth, where he was Commander in Town for several years. Jim completed his career in the Metropolitan Police as commander before returning to the southwest.

Jim was extremely well known, respected and liked by colleagues and partners across the force, especially in Plymouth. His untimely death is a shock to us all.

Police have confirmed the sudden death of Plymouth’s former top cop, Jim Webster, who became the acting assistant chief constable (ACC) of Devon and Cornwall Police and a commander with the Metropolitan Police before retiring to the South West.
