On April 20, 2010, he was found dead at the age of 47 in a Salt Lake City hotel room on a business trip. He was in his seventeenth season with the Rockies, his ninth as club president. Initial indications were that he died of natural causes. Other important figures in the game paid tribute to him as news of his death was made public.

On August 30, 2010, it was announced that McGregor died of a rare virus that infected his heart muscle. The infection caused lymphatic myocarditis, killing a healthy McGregor. “In an unusual manifestation of viral disease, this organism infiltrated the heart muscle and disrupted the electrical pathways that tell the heart to beat properly,” said a statement from his family. “The heart muscle could have recovered from the viral attack if these electrical pathways had not been destroyed, but the muscle could have been permanently weakened and destined for eventual heart failure.” He continued: “Just as a healthy brain can become infected with viral meningitis, a healthy heart can become infected with viral myocarditis,” said the McGregor family. “Fortunately, the vast majority of viral illnesses do not harm the heart or brain.”

McGregor was a multi-sport athlete at Lakewood High School in Colorado before starring with the Colorado State Rams soccer team as a tight end. McGregor was a principal for four years at Colorado State University. Regarded as a smaller midfielder when he arrived on campus, McGregor went from being a freshman to the American second-team tight end in 1984. He grew to 6-foot-8-inch and 250-pound, and went on to become a whole- Western Athletic Conference tight end from 1982 to 1984. He set a school record in a single season with 69 sacks in 1983, a mark that held for ten years. He was voted for the Colorado State’s Century-old team in 1992 and was named a member of the CSU Hall of Fame in 1996.

After his retirement from soccer, McGregor embarked on a career in sports administration. He was associate sports director at the University of Arkansas for four years and then assistant soccer coach for two years at the University of Florida from 1988 to 1989, where he earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in sports administration. He joined the Colorado Rockies in October 1993 as senior director of operations. He was promoted to Senior Vice President in 1996 and Executive Vice President in 1998. He was named Team President in 2001.
