Larry Sherman Work & Career

Sherman started Trax in Chicago in 1983. He would become one of the biggest dance music labels of all time, helping define house and acid house music with records by Phuture (“Acid Tracks), Jamie Principle and Frankie Knuckles ( “Your Love”), Adonis (“No Way Back”), Larry Heard (“Can You Feel It?”) And Jefferson (“Move Your Body”), among many others. His legacy in his music is complicated. As 5 Magazine describes, the label was known for its poor-quality vinyl presses, as well as for failing to sign proper artist contracts and allegedly not paying royalties.

Larry Sherman Trax Record Founder

Multiple reports have stated that Larry Sherman, founder of early Chicago House Music record label Trax Records

Larry Sherman founded Trax in 1984 and the label was one of two key footprints (the other being DJ International) that propelled the Chicago House sound to a massive level. In its first 5 years, Trax Records released a timeless amount of classic records from Chicago House Music’s first wave of artists. Trax was very important, and no one could write the House Music story without playing an important role.

However, despite Trax being acclaimed for his A&R catalog and work, Trax’s legacy was complicated in the “wild ride” of Chicago House Music’s early years. Today’s listeners and collectors often complain of poor pressures with “pops” and blemishes, reportedly, from the use of cheap or recycled vinyl. Furthermore, many of the early 5 Mag profiles of some of Chicago House Music legends outlined the then young, often black, artists’ feeling of exploitation. Jamie Principle told 5 Mag in 2011 that he never had a contract of any kind with Trax, while DJ Pierre de Phuture, whose Acid Tracks was released on Trax, claimed that he never received any royalties from the label so he became one. of the best-selling songs of all time.

In the label’s later years, Sherman, Trax and Rachael Cain were involved in a complicated deal with the Toronto-based company Casablanca, which Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune said lead to the label “losing control” of this same catalog for a time. Eventually, the situation was cleared and the label was revived by Cain in 2006.
