Nicholas Braid Stabbed

The 35-year-old man received a chest injury outside the Beachcomber Resort around 7:00 p.m. before he was rushed to the hospital where he later died. Police spent the night conducting interviews, and were in the process of obtaining CCTV footage this morning. Since then, they have called a 20-year-old woman, who they believe will be able to help with the investigations. Police say the woman is known to frequent, reside, and associate with people in the Surfers Paradise, Southport, and Labrador areas. She is described as a Maori / Pacific Islander in appearance, approximately 170 cm tall with a medium build. She has long black hair and brown eyes and a tattoo of a fern on one hand. Members of the public are advised not to approach the person and are encouraged to contact the police. Previously, police were unable to say categorically whether their suspect was male or female, and ruled out that the attacker and victim were in a relationship.

“It’s certainly not a spousal partner, or some sort of situation like that.

“Our early indications are they are loosely known to each other – the group,” Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn told reporters earlier.

The 35-year-old was rushed to hospital after suffering a wound to his chest around 7.15pm, though he passed away shortly after.

Police Confirm 20 Years Old Women Arrested

Police confirmed the 20-year-old was arrested late this afternoon following a public appeal.

She is now assisting detectives with their investigation into the murder of Surfers Paradise man Nicholas Braid.

“Our investigations suggest at this time that it happened in the trail area, just off Hanlon Street, outside the Beachcomer apartments, and that’s certainly where it hit the ground,” Detective Inspector Ahearn said. Police say they have already spoken to several people who were present at the scene, although they are looking for other possible witnesses to come forward. Initial investigations suggest that the people there were little known to each other and that the attacker was not a spouse of the victim, although they argue that the investigation remains very open at this stage.

“There were a number of people who were present there, and we have a number of people who’ve provided us versions of what’s occurred.

“We’re also seeking other people who were present in Hanlon Street between 6.00pm and 8.00pm last night to come forward,” Detective Inspector Ahearn said.

It’s understood the group had links to one of the rooms at the resort, though the victim didn’t live there.

Police have so far been unable to narrow down if the attack was carried out by one person or multiple people.

They’ve been trying to track down everyone who might have been in the area, even putting in place a roadblock while they canvassed the area overnight.

It’s understood that block has since been removed.

“We had various reports of people being seen in various areas who’ve been in Hanlon Street and moved to different areas of Surfers Paradise.

“And so a police search was orchestrated in various streets during the evening last night and our investigation continues today.

“One particular street down there, we had reports of a person down there who we thought might have been at the scene.

“So we really wanted to make sure that we captured all the people leaving that area, so we assessed that a road block at that time was the most appropriate way to canvas that area,” Detective Inspector Ahearn said.

Forensic pathology work is still underway to determine the extent of the man’s wound, though police believe it was a knife-like weapon that was used.

“It appears that it’s from an edged weapon, like a knife or something similar.

“But of course we’ve got some forensic pathology work to do to give us the exact nature of that injury,” Detective Ahearn said.

Detectives are now trying to determine what CCTV coverage is available in the Surfers Paradise area, and will be examining the contents today.
