Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball legend Noel Johnson passed away Tuesday at the age of 47 after losing his battle with ovarian cancer.

Noel Johnson was the point guard for Texas Tech for the 1993 NCAA Championship race. Johnson played a pivotal role in the show by winning four consecutive Southwest Conference titles and reaching four NCAA Sweet 16s during his career at Lubbock. Johnson played at Texas Tech from 1991-1995.

Johnson graduated from Texas Tech in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports with a major in English. She then earned her Master of Education from the State of Texas in 2002.

Johnson became the Mustangs’ head coach in 2008. During her 12 years, the MSU women’s basketball team made it to the NCAA tournaments three times and won the Lone Star Conference tournament for the first time in the show’s history in 2012. Johnson was named LSC Coach of the Year that season. Overall, Mustangs have posted a record 158-164 (.491) under Johnson’s guidance. This past year, Johnson stepped away from the team for its final ten games to focus on her battle with cancer.

Prior to her time at Midwestern State, Johnson was an assistant coach at the University of North Texas and at Texas State University. Noel’s playing career consisted of four years at Texas Tech from 1991 to 1995, where the Red Raiders won a national championship in 1993. She was named to the Texas Tech Hall of Honor in 2005.

She also served as an assistant coach at North Texas from 2007-08 before taking over as head coach at Midwestern State.
