Robin Roberts Tribute
Robin Roberts has paid an emotional tribute to a Good Morning America camera operator who passed away from complications due to the coronavirus.
The TV host held back tears as alongside Michael Strahan and George Stephanopoulos, she remembered their ‘bright light’ Tony Greer.
Roberts led the acknowledgment of the man they considered ‘family’, as the infection rate in New York City was over 76,870 Wednesday morning and the number of deaths surpassed 4,000.
‘George, as you know, this morning we also have some incredibly tough news to share with everyone,’ Roberts began. ‘It’s a sad day for our family. We know coronavirus has affected so many of you and it has claimed one of our family members too.
Our talented studio camera operator, Tony Greer has passed away from complications due to the coronavirus. He was such a bright light working in our studio for more than six years and you could just feel Tony’s beautiful spirit. Could feel it from a mile away.’
Showing images of Greer in the New York City studio and with his family, Roberts told viewers of how well they got to know each other over the years.
Roberts began to tear up as images flashed across the screen showing the music lover playing ‘a mean guitar’. She added that in-between gigs, the ‘cool dude’ was adored by their celebrity guests too.
Highlighting images of Sen. Kamala Harris, Jennifer Aniston, Common and several other stars, the host told of how ‘they were gracious to take a picture with him’.
‘We loved every single moment we were blessed to spend and share with Tony,’ Roberts told viewers.
Roberts also dedicated a section of the tribute to his mourning loved ones.
‘We love Tony and there are so many things they loved. He loved his family. His beloved mother Fannie, his sister Janet. His brother Kevin. He loved taking his nieces, nephews, any relative who came to visit him, he’d take them out and show them the city,’ Roberts said.
‘He loved his longtime girlfriend Robin. We’re thinking of her. She lives in his hometown of Chicago. They loved traveling the world together and traveled extensively.’
‘Our condolences to his family in Chicago, his mother Fannie. We’ve got to say this to you, ma’am, your son was a good man. He was kind, he was thoughtful. He was always a gentleman and, George, you know as a parent, you can’t ask for much more than that.’
It prompted Stephanopoulos to chime in with his own memories of ‘consummate gentleman’ Greer.
Dubbing him a ‘total pro’ and someone always boasting a smile, Stephanopoulos recalled how he and Greer shared the early shift in the breakfast room.
Strahan added: ‘You saw him in the early shift. I guess he was going back for seconds because I would see him a little bit later there as well but he will be missed here in our studio and thoughts and prayers are with Tony’s family and our GMA family as well.’
